Nifty- Thrifty Thursday

Saving money at the grocery store. Its one of the few things you can do to really stretch your dollars. Believe it or not, there are many more ways than simply clipping coupons to save as well.

Sign up for as many of the store rewards/advantage programs as you can. Stores often offer deeper discounts or special sales to cardholders and many will even reward you with points that can be redeemed for merchandise, gift cards, store credit or gas discounts/cards. Don't stop at the grocery store card either. CVS offers the Extra Care Card that rewards you with store dollars, coupons and special sale prices.

Use sites like coupons.com to print off coupons as you need them. If you have favorite brands, visit the product or manufacturer website and see if they offer printable coupons. You may also receive coupons and special offers when you sign up for company/product email newsletters.

Fill your cart without emptying your checking account! Moneysavingmom.com has a fabulous page full of Supermarket Savings and Hillbilly Housewife gives very valuable information for planning your menu!

When you get home from the grocery store, be sure to put everything away so as to avoid forgetting to put the eggs in the fridge because they were put in a bag with pantry stuff. Ask me how I know about that one. :o) I also have a habit of putting meats in the fridge that I plan on using the next day only to have plans change and the food sits for a couple of days and all of a sudden, it is spoiled. I have learned the hard way to just put anything I am not going to cook immediately right into the freezer. I can always thaw it quickly- I can't save it after its been spoiled.

Now, not every meal can be eaten at home. Check out Restaurant.com to purchase restaurant certificates for a fraction of the price!

What do you do to save money at the store?
