Mom's Morning Out

All through the school year, a few of the Moms from Steven's preschool have gathered on the first and third Thursday of each month for bible study and to get better acquainted.

I hadn't gone to one until yesterday. Hey, it only took me 8 months to get it in gear and go.

The group was supposed to meet at my girlfriend's house, but her oldest daughter got sick. Her Mom, who lives next door, was going to be doing the devotional for the morning and volunteered to host it at her house instead.

The morning was all about the garden. After all, that's where the human journey began and where motherhood came into existence.

Our hostess read from a book (I'm sorry, but I didn't get the title) that talked about how we should each have a spot near a garden to have time to ourselves, even if it means a chair near a few pots sitting on a window sill. The book went on to say that nowhere are we nearer to God than in a garden.

Our hostess said that she finds when she is working in her garden she appreciates the flowers and what went into creating each and every petal and leaf which leads to her appreciating her family and all of her blessings.

We discussed what types of gardening we each do, if any, and how gardening can be a stress reliever. The hostess mentioned that when her girls were dating in high school, one of them had a boyfriend she didn't like at all. When he would come to their house, she would escape to her garden and one time hoed up an entire flower bed up while he was there.

A garden can be a great place for us moms to get away when we need it and it can also be a place where the family works together. Think about how many children learned gardening how-to's by helping a parent or grandparent in the garden.

The morning went on to include a tour of our hostess's garden and she even gave us several things to add to our own gardens!

She gave us each a Daylily, a basket of Forget-me-nots, a Hyacinth and seeds for Scarlet Runner Bean plants which will be a fun plant for the kids.

Here are a couple of pictures I took in her garden:

"For as the earth bringeth forth her bud, and as the garden causeth the things that are sown in it to spring forth; so the Lord GOD will cause righteousness and praise to spring forth before all the nations." ~Isaiah 61:11

Sounds like you had a wonderful time! I can totally relate to it taking so long to get involved, I'm that way, too!

It's great that you finally took the leap and joined the group. I don't really like groups unless I know pretty much everyone already. I give you credit!

What fun gifts to get. I love getting plants, the kids keep asking what I want for Mother's Day and I keep not-so-subtly saying "plants."
