Making Butter

Tackle It Tuesday Meme

Well, I never did get to addressing my Christmas cards as I had posted earlier today, but they'll still be there after the kiddos have gone to bed.

What we decided to do instead was make butter for Thanksgiving.

When I was in Kindergarden, we made better by putting heavy cream in a container and we passed it around and everyone shook it to death. My Mom took the idea home and every year, she 'asked' us girls to make butter since we did 'such a good job'. We loved doing it unil we figured out that was how she kept up busy while she cooked. Ce'st la vie!

I introduced my boys to this... ahem... tradition last year even though I ended up actually finishing it up for them.

Today at the grocery store, I noticed heavy cream was on sale and bought some for that purpose. Then, Matthew came home from school telling me the AMAZING tale of their butter-making experience at school today.

"We passed it around the class 3 times and it turned RIGHT-INTO-BUTTER!"

"Did you tell them that you made that at home last year?"

"Oh! We did?" (you can almost SEE the puzzled expression, can't you?)

In my wisest Mommy voice I said,"Actually, I bought some cream today so you could do that."

He responded in his most amazed, Mom-you're-the-greatest-Mom-in-the-world-I-was-just-going-to-ask-you-to-get-cream-at-the-store-next-time voice. "Awesome! Can we make it now?"

"Of course we can sweetie!" **wink**

So here are the before, during and after pics. Aren't they cute? **wink**

P.S. We added a drop of yellow food coloring to the cream to make it come out more yellow.

If you try this, make sure you use a container larger than we did. We ended up transfering it to a taller container so there is room for the cream to move once it gets all frothy. Shake until it 'breaks' or separates into a lump of butter and thin (real) buttermilk. Pour off the liquid and drink or discard.
