Making a Simple Scarf

A local craft store is handing out skeins of camouflage yarn to make scarves for the troops. The scarves will be 7 X 47 inches when finished and can be knitted or crocheted. I hadn't heard about this until they sent a memo around at work about it. A bunch of us have picked up our yarn and we're working away. When we finish, we'll return them to the store and the USO will send them to our brave troops overseas.

I just got started on mine this morning, so it only has a couple of rows in the picture. I wanted to get this online ASAP so others can follow suit. You don't have to have a craft store that is doing this in order to participate. If you can knit or crochet, I'm betting you have some old yarn sitting around somewhere in your house. I know I have plenty.

The pattern given on the yarn is for knitting and , though I am a horrible knitter, it looks pretty simple. A seasoned knitter could knock one of these out in an afternoon. Here it is:

Bernat Camouflage Scarf

Size

Width: 7 ins (18 cm)

Length: 47 ins (119.5 cm)

Materials

Bernat Camouflage (5 oz/142 g)

Scarf= 1 Ball

Size 5 mm (US 8) knitting needles or size needed to obtain gauge.

Gauge

18 sts and 24 rows = 4 ins (10 cm) in stocking st.

Instructions

SCARF

Cast on 31 sts.

1st row: (RS). Knit.

2nd row: P1. *K1. P1. Rep from * to end.

Rep these 2 rows until work from beg measures 47 ins (119.5 cm).

Fasten off.

Since I crochet, Here is what I did:

Hook: size H/8
Row 1: Ch 22. DC in first ch from end. DC 20. Ch 1, turn.
Row 2: *DC in each DC. Ch 1, turn.
Row 3: Repeat from * until a length of 47 inches is reached. Fasten off.

I'm all about tossing gauges out the window when it comes to blankets and scarves. I never meet the gauge of a pattern exactly and when I'm making something that doesn't have to fit someones particular size, what does it matter?



If you want to use your craftiness for good, make a simple scarf and donate it to a shelter or resale shop. You can be even more ambitious and make a blanket or quilt. I'm sure baby blankets are also appreciated by these places.
