Nifty Thirfty Thursday: 4 Ways To Save Using Cash

Consumers today can get caught up in the latest technology for shoppers. Credit cards, debit cards, ATM cards, Pay Pal and the new tap and pay mini cards prey on our busy lifestyles and desire for instant gratification. Clever commercials send us on a guilt trip for slowing down the pace if we stop to write a check or pull cash out of our wallet or fool us into thinking we can win a marathon if we use their service. WE MUST STOP FALLING FOR IT!

The beauty of any deal may only be skin deep. I'm not saying these services are bad. I'm not saying that you can't have these things and use them wisely. In fact, a proper arsenal of credit and financial services is important for everyone, but how you use them will make or break the bank. The same goes for cash, but often using cash can actually save you money.

It takes a while to get used to using cash on a regular basis if you are used to using other methods, but it will all be worth it when you get your monthly statements. Here are 5 ways you can save by using cash:

  1. Use cash at the grocery store. It makes sense that if you only have a certain amount to spend, you'll buy less. And when you give yourself a smaller budget to work with, you'll get only what you need. You might pass up on the junk food and you'll be more likely to check unit prices to make sure you get the most for your money. You might also use more coupons. Take a calculator so you can keep a running tally.

  2. Use cash at restaurants. Restaurants often take your card out of your sight and that can be dangerous. Whenever your card is out of sight, you have no clue who has control of it. Even if you go over your statements, will you notice a small tip overage? Will you notice $1 or $2 tacked onto the total a month later? This is not an uncommon scam.

  3. Use cash to fill your tank. Not literally, of course, though it can feel like that some days. Gas stations are starting to charge more per gallon to customers who use credit cards to cover the service charge they have to pay to the credit card companies. Cash can save you a bundle in this case.

  4. Pay cash for large items. Don't go digging into your savings account for a new TV or anything. Instead, try shopping around, saving a little each week and asking the store MANAGER if he or she will give a discount if you pay in cash. You'll be surprised at how many will.

That's all for this week. Make sure you join me here each Thursday for more savings tips and links! If you have a great site you'd like me to consider including in NTT, leave a comment or email me.
